KNIGHT of THE ROYAL AND MILITARY ORDER OF SAINT-LOUIS (1693 to 1830)

Looking for a way to motivate and reward all the Officers of his Armies for outstanding and long services, King Louis XIV established the “Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis” in April 1693. The Order was the first military reward in modern history to be open to all Officers from the Land or Naval armies, nevertheless their origin of birth. However, it was available only to catholic Officers. It was issued in three classes which had to be followed; Knight (unlimited number), Commander (24) and Grand Cross (8). Continued in Exile during the French Revolution, reiterate after the Empire as a royal order, the “Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis” was finally discontinued in 1830 by King Louis-Philippe. Nearly three hundred crosses were awarded for service in New France and/or to Canadians Officers from 1693 to 1760.

Cependant, il fallait être catholique. L’Ordre avait trois classes dont il fallait suivre la séquence : chevalier: (nombre illimité), commandeur (24) et grand-croix (8). Continuée lors de l’Exile durant la Révolution française, ré-institué comme ordre royal après l’Empire, l’Ordre fût finalement aboli par le roi Louis-Philippe en 1830. Près de trois cents croix ont été octroyées pour service en Nouvelle-France ou à des officiers canadiens de 1693 à 1760.
